Thesis
During the American Civil War, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry shattered racial barriers. Against tremendous odds, the men of the 54th earned rights, respect and recognition giving African Americans a glimpse of equality, but holding back the tide of racism would prove to be much harder than winning the Civil War.
